“I’ve been a vocalist in a rock band for 15 years, it’s an extreme job, singing wise. So far I’ve never had any vocal coaching or lessons, I just completely made it up as I went along and never had any vocal health issues.
The problems came up when the band started getting traction and we began going on tour. With longer shows and further upcoming tour dates I always knew my voice’s limitations. After a certain amount of shows my voice would become unreliable. The anxiety this caused me was quite intense because I felt the weight of the band on my shoulders. If my voice suddenly wouldn’t work then parts of the tour would need to be cancelled or rescheduled.
I had to take action as I had no other choice, for my voice and my mind! At first I was quite sceptical, to be honest as I thought I knew my voice, and the way I was taking care of it was “doing the job”. I didn’t think I would be able to really see much improvement. How wrong I was. I completed a 6 week tour prep. course with Alexandra leading up to a tour of 9 shows, with various 3 shows back to back, and a day off in between each run. I was nervous as our shows are up to 1 hour 20 min. per night, and they are extremely energetic and require some big vocals. We started with 2 sessions a week at 30 minutes each, up until two weeks before the start of the tour when we went up to 60 min. sessions. It really took me a while to get my head around the exercises and to understand what my voice needed. We divided the sessions into vocal exercises and song application.
The vocal workouts were like preparing for a marathon or going to the gym and training parts of my body to undertake a huge athletic feat. After only a couple of sessions everything just started to feel better. My voice felt smoother, and it became easier to talk on a day to day basis. It felt like a “well oiled machine”, something I’d never experienced before. Obviously working out makes you feel better, but until I practiced with Alexandra’s exercises my voice had never felt even remotely so good! I was impressed by how effortless my voice felt, and over the next few weeks, with practice and exercising at home my voice just got stronger and stronger, easier to control and more powerful. At the same time I neither felt like I was using it to the limit nor it was degrading which resulted in my confidence coming back. I knew for a fact, with Alexandra’s daily routines on tour my voice wasn't even going to be an issue. I could relax and enjoy each show, trusting the next would be just “as killer”.
The other part of the vocal workouts was applying the technique to our songs. On one side you’re building up strength and resilience and on the other you are learning how to sing, achieve the same level of vocals required to “kill” your performance, without actually killing your voice! Vowel modification is especially a game changer! This helped me so much as I learned how to get across my power and commitment to the delivery without putting my vocal cords through hell! Suddenly I can sing these songs without screaming my head off and destroying my voice. I was blown away!
Without exaggeration I can tell that Alexandra’s coaching has absolutely transformed my singing career. My anxiety has cleared, my confidence is back and my performances are better than ever. I really cannot recommend what she does highly enough. She teaches in a fashion easy to follow and understand. Her devotion to her clients outside of the sessions is exceptional. I could contact her at any moment on tour for advice and help in case I needed it. She is “the real deal” for any touring artist and I am extremely grateful for her coaching and help.” - Baz, Frontman of Rock Band Massive Wagons, Lancaster, England, U.K.
